Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program

This program offers free tax preparation services to taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $54,000 or less. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation to qualified individuals in local communities. Taxpayers will learn about tax credits for which they may qualify such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled.

Tax appointments are available late January to mid April. 2018 tax season program is now closed. 2019 tax season program information will be made available in early 2019.

United Way of Porter County is one of 15 organizations that make up the Northwest Indiana Asset Building Coalition, which provides VITA program services in Lake, Porter, Pulaski and Starke Counties. To make an appointment at a different Asset Building Coalition location, click here.
